To choose a CNC press brake, evaluate five key factors: bending force (tonnage), bending length , drive system (hydraulic vs. servo-electric), CNC controller (Delem, Cybelec, or ESA), and after-sales support in your region. For precision work, require ±0.01 mm repeatability. For energy efficiency, choose all-electric servo models.
Factor 1: Bending Force (Tonnage)
Bending force, measured in kilonewtons (kN) or metric tons, determines the maximum material thickness and length the machine can bend. The required tonnage is calculated based on material tensile strength, sheet thickness, and V-die opening width. As a rule of thumb, bending 3 mm mild steel across a 3,000 mm length requires approximately 100 tons of force. Always select a machine with 20–30% headroom above your calculated requirement to allow for tooling wear and material variations.
According to ISO 16090-1 (Machine Tools Safety — Machining Centres), press brakes must incorporate overload protection systems to prevent structural damage when bending force limits are exceeded. Verify that your prospective machine complies with this standard.
Factor 2: Bending Length and Back Gauge
Bending length (the distance between the machine's side frames) must accommodate your longest workpiece. Standard lengths range from 1,600 mm to 6,000 mm for industrial machines. The back gauge — the CNC-controlled stop that positions the sheet — is equally important.
